ABOUT OUR EVENTS
theCOLOUR: Spirit of the Flats
A promotional forum for artists from the Cape Flats. Initiated in July
2003, this event focused on showcasing arts across the four disciplines -
words, music, movement and visual art. Events were held at the Joseph Stone
Auditorium in Athlone, Rondevlei Nature Reserve in Grassy Park and the
District Six Museum. Part of theCOLOUR's aim was to use Cape Flats venues
as cultural hotspots.
Flat Sounds at Armchair Theatre
The Flat Sounds sessions at the Independent Armchair Theatre in Observatory
heralded the official public launch of Dala Flat Music. This hugely
successful event, held weekly during October 2003, featured musicians
Hilton Schilder, Clement Benny, Jonathan Roubain, Mac Mckenzie, and poets
Mario "Devious" van Rooy, James Matthews and others.
Rebirth of Goema
The Flat Sounds Afterwork Parties at West End/Galaxy during April and May
2004, featured goema musicians celebrated the return of Goema to the Cape
Flats.
Gam Sushi
Gam Sushi, modelled on the popular house parties of the 1980's was created
(and launched in July 2004 at Black Sheep Towers) to provide a space where
people could go to enjoy good music and dance or just chill, without the
social frills normally attached to nightclubbing. It's a space where the
music is the focal point, not image or the clothes you're wearing, hence
the catch phrase No Dress Code :: Just an Open Mind.
38 Special Words and Music
38 Special Words and Music at 38 Special Coffee Shop and Gallery in Cape
Town brought together some of the City's best poets and musos. The focus
was on blending poetry and music, creating a gig where the two were
enjoyed hand in hand. And the idea was not merely to layer poetry over
soundscapes - the collaborations were always innovative and cutting edge.
This event also enjoyed great sucess as well as the support of respected
poets, James Matthews and Antjie Krog.
Heritage Festival in Namaqualand
Organised by conservationists at the Skilpad National Park in Kammieskroon,
the Heritage Day festival aimed to celebrate the cultural and environmental
heritage of the area. Dala Flat Music was invited to provide entertainment
at the events, and we also worked with and recorded local musicians in
Garries and Spoegrivier.
Dala Favella
Through this event we explored the musical and cultural links and
similarities between the Slums (Favellas) of Brazil and areas on the Cape
Flats. These events featured live musicians, DJs playing afro-brazillian
music and capoeiristas displaying their moves.
Intimate Electronica
October 2004 saw the birth of Intimate Electronica, an innovative concept
that saw the blending of local accoustic music and intelligent electronic
productions.
